A Look Back

June 25, 2021 By JPMcLean 16 Comments

JP McLean signing books Finding this old photo of me signing my first novel reminded me how far my writing career has come.

This photo was taken at Abraxas Books on Denman Island in October 2012. I was signing copies of Secret Sky with its original cover and title. Abraxas has sold more Gift Legacy trade paperbacks than any other indie bookstore! (Thanks, Abraxas!)

Since then, there have been a few big milestones . . .

1. I’ve completed SEVEN books in the Gift Legacy, an urban fantasy series about Emelynn Taylor and a secret society of Fliers who live among us and have the gift of flight.

2. The books have received over 225 reviews like this recent one from Midwest Book Review:

“A deftly crafted, impressively original and inherently compelling read from first page to last, Secret Sky launches a new The Gift Legacy series by J. P. McLean. A fully entertaining, plot twisting novel that will leave its readers looking eagerly toward the next thrilling installment, Secret Sky is especially and unreservedly recommended for community library action/adventure, romance, and metaphysical fiction collections.”

Out of Sync

Out of sync

Recently, I paid a visit to the dental hygienist, a lovely woman named Tracy. I’ve been her patient for more years than I care to remember. We chat during those short spurts of time between her scraping my teeth and her sighing with exasperation as she goes in search of more menacing tools.

During one of these short respites, I tell her, “The third book of my series is coming out this week.” I then take the opportunity to lick my lips and soften the stinging cracks that tend to develop when fingers and tools are crammed into my mouth.

That was fast

“Already,” she said. “That was fast.” And then she dove back in with both hands to the musical accompaniment of a Dremel, leaving me to my thoughts.

Already? I wondered. Fast? Those words didn’t fit. It feels like a lifetime ago that I typed The End. I remember how good it felt to finish writing that first draft of the third book. In fact, I wrote a blog post about it, though the memory is fuzzy…possibly because a delicious bottle of Amarone was involved.

And now that I’m into a new writing project, “The End” seems even further back there, so “already” and “fast” are a little disorienting. I’m reminded of the first time you see the spring fashions in the shop windows on store mannequins. You shake your head and shiver thinking of the frost you just stamped off your boots.

I feel like one of those mannequins. I’m out of sync.

If only I could have said “already,” and “that was fast,” when she finally holstered her scary hygienist’s tools. Are you out of sync? Tell me all about it while I go grab some lip balm.

You can order The Gift: Awakening* with one simple click here. Your adventure awaits…buckle up.

*Awakening is now titled Secret Sky

Tiny Office…Great View

November 14, 2013 By JPMcLean 10 Comments

My office may be tiny, but there’s a great view!

A few weeks ago, I attended a workshop about income tax and the self-employed. It was perhaps a bit premature; after all, you need an income to write expenses off against, but I’m nothing if not optimistic. In attendance were a diverse group of islanders with small businesses ranging from jewelry making to gardening.

The “Use of Home” subject came up raising all kinds of questions about how to properly measure and report the space we use for conducting our business. Some artists use their entire home to store, display and create their art. Gardeners and potters use outdoor space. Some have dedicated offices and others use multi-purpose areas, like kitchen counters and spare bedrooms.

The spaces I use to write

It made me think about the space I use to write. We have an office at the back of the house. It has a wrap-around desk, a comfortable chair, a large desk-top computer, a printer, and every other “office” supply ready at hand.

I never use it. I feel isolated there. Stymied.

Instead, I’ve commandeered a corner of the dining room. I use my grandmother’s old sewing machine cabinet as a table and on dark days I turn on an old lamp of hers to light my little nook. I set my bevies on the cabinet by the dictionary, put my feet up on the ottoman and pull my computer into my lap.

JP's view of the ocean from her writing deskEach day’s view is different. Some days it’s so bright I have to roll out of the glare. On other days, the fog creeps right up to the edge of the deck, obliterating everything. On stormy days, the windows are spattered with salt spray and tree debris from the incredible winds. Is it any wonder the beach and the storms find their way onto the pages of my books?

As I write this post, it’s sunny and I’m smiling to myself as two thoughts occur to me. 1. This tiny office with the great view is far too small to warrant the paperwork necessary to “claim” it on my taxes. And 2. How did I ever get so lucky?

Fogged in

Full moon rising through the fog on Denman Island

I’ve been squirreled away again. Fogged in. Granted, it’s easy to hunker down in lousy weather—like this dense fog that’s enveloped our part of the coast for the past ten days—but it’s not good. The burrowing in, that is, especially when I’m so narrowly focused.

Multi-tasking is something I know I can do; I routinely prep carrots for two meals and onions for three; I weed and fertilize while I set aside seedlings for next year’s plant sale; and I’m guilty of putting phone calls on speaker so I can make a bed or iron while catching up.

So, why is it that when the proof for my latest book comes in, my world stops rotating while I attend to it – and pretty much nothing else? Maybe it’s more than the weather that’s fogged in? I barely make time to eat and sleep. It’s a little bit crazy, I have to admit. What is it about me and writing that brings out this single-minded behaviour? No—don’t answer that!

I’d read somewhere that women were excellent multi-taskers. If this conclusion is based on averaging, then I  apologize to womankind for lowering the average.

The up-side to the crazy is that book 3 of The Gift Legacy, Redemption (now titled Burning Lies) is back in the hands of the publisher and only weeks away from release. I can’t wait!

And wait until you see the cover. Gifted artist, Viona Halim has, once again, painted a suitably ominous scene for Redemption’s cover. It’s breath-taking…and I’ll reveal it as soon as the fine-tuning on the title lettering is complete. The first people to see it will be my newsletter subscribers, who also receive free short stories.
