Paying the Couch Surfing Piper

December 11, 2015 By JPMcLean 8 Comments

View of storm from inside Denman Island houseThe sideways rain is here again. The wind paints the windows in a revolving display of fir needles, leaves and arbutus bark. Miss Molly and I both prefer the comfort of the couch in weather like this. And that means one of us will be paying the couch surfing piper.

The windy rain is just my latest excuse for sitting on my derrière. Writing is my regular excuse. When I’ve been inactive for too long, my back protests, which happened a few months ago. It prompted me to re-ignite my cardio routine at the gym. I try to keep it to twenty minutes a day so it doesn’t become a chore. It works like a charm and keeps my back ache at bay.

A New Workout Routine

Then, a couple of days ago, a friend suggested I join her for a different kind of workout. I figured a change in routine would be good. She likes Jillian Michaels’ twenty-minute workouts, which fits my “not a chore” criteria. There are four workout levels on this CD. We chose the first level—the one for beginners. I felt pretty good going in with my twenty-minute cardio down pat.

Ha! Jillian stomped on my sad cardio prep (and I think she was smiling sadistically). I didn’t make it through the measly twenty minutes without rest stops, plural. I tripped over my own feet, lost my balance and couldn’t hold the plank position for more than a few seconds. Afterward, muscles I only pretended to use before that, let me know the truth. Foolish me, I went back for another run at it the next day and before I crawled into bed, my hamstrings, stomach and derriere each made their protests known.

On day three, I had to go shopping off island. Thank god. Laughing hurt, sitting down hurt, getting up was worse, even walking hurt. I had a number of stops to make, and getting in and out of the car hurt. The most memorable stop was Home Depot. I was looking for an oddball piece of hardware and saw something promising on a bottom shelf. Bending down to look was tenuous, squatting proved impossible. I ended up on all fours, and the promising item didn’t even pan out. I had to pull myself up on the shelving, which hurt because I was laughing.

Today is day four and I’m going back for more. I will get through that damn routine if it kills me. You hear that Jillian!

On Summer, Cherries, and Shoulds

June 25, 2015 By JPMcLean 8 Comments

On Summer, cherries, and shoulds. Abundant cherries on a cherry-tree branchLook at those cherries! Man, what a crop. It’s been a fabulous spring—biggest, sweetest cherries ever! And now spring is behind us and the cherries are already gone. Even these long perfect days of summer will fly by far too quickly.

So why not take the time to savour what’s right in front of us while it’s still sweet?

We’ve all got things we should do, and they won’t go away for neglecting them. For example, I should clean the spider webs out of the window casings, and I should transplant the winter jasmine before it croaks. I should definitely promote my new book.

But summer days aren’t getting any longer, so I’m going to put the shoulds on the back burner and spend a day writing in the shade of the brolly with an iced tea—I might even up my game with a glass of wine. I’m going to enjoy the hell out of a girl’s night out—late—on a weeknight! I may even indulge in a lazy afternoon pedicure and let my nails dry in the sunshine with a book in my hands, my phone close by and my friends on speed-dial.

I hope you’re able to put away your shoulds for an afternoon or two as well. Enjoy the summer while it’s here.

If you’re looking for something to read in the shade of that brolly, click here to buy Lethal Waters. It’s good for the soul! And if ebooks or Amazon aren’t your preference, you can find other purchase options under the Bookstore Tab.

Sitting Yourself To Death

January 22, 2015 By JPMcLean 28 Comments

Sitting yourself to death. Is it just me, or have you noticed an increasing number of blog posts about the dangers of prolonged sitting? The warnings would be easier to ignore if I wasn’t guilty of getting so caught up in my writing that sometimes I don’t even notice how long I’ve been sitting until I lose daylight. Even then, I’ve been known to carry on and type by the light of the laptop. When I finally cave in and stand up, my back cracks, my hips creak and I pinch a nerve in my neck reaching for the light switch.

That’s not good.

I need to be more mindful of my health if I want to keep it, so I’m making some changes.

One of the things I’m doing to get moving is to write standing up. Lucky for me, we have a bar between our kitchen and dining room that’s at the perfect height. It’s a remarkably comfortable writing position.

I’m also spending more time at our local gym, though I must say, motivating myself to get there is an issue, and I’ve learned that dressing for the gym doesn’t necessarily equate to making it to the gym.

Something that doesn’t require much motivation, is taking long walks. We have a number of great trails on the island and Molly is only too happy to accompany me as long as the rain isn’t torrential and the winds aren’t howling (okay, so it’s me who doesn’t like being out in the rain and wind. Those are gym days . . . sometimes).

Walking has the added bonus of loosening stubborn writing knots. On today’s walk, for example, I was mulling over of a new story idea I’ve been teasing out. I’d been having trouble with the motivation for one of the characters. Their motivation is pivotal and without it, the story falls apart. By the time I got back to the trailhead, the motivation I’d been seeking, along with a cascading shower of supporting ideas, dropped out of the ether.

The moment I got home, I drafted a synopsis for a completely new book idea. Of course, I was sitting on my butt while I typed it, but at least I’d been out for a walk.

How do you get your butt out of your chair?

When you’re back from your walk, reward your good behaviour by curling up with a book. You can get Secret Sky with one click right here. And if ebooks or Amazon aren’t your preference, other options are available under the Bookstore Tab.

Fogged in

Full moon rise through the fog on Denman Island
Full moon rising through the fog on Denman Island

I’ve been squirreled away again. Fogged in. Granted, it’s easy to hunker down in lousy weather—like this dense fog that’s enveloped our part of the coast for the past ten days—but it’s not good. The burrowing in, that is, especially when I’m so narrowly focused.

Multi-tasking is something I know I can do; I routinely prep carrots for two meals and onions for three; I weed and fertilize while I set aside seedlings for next year’s plant sale; and I’m guilty of putting phone calls on speaker so I can make a bed or iron while catching up.

So, why is it that when the proof for my latest book comes in, my world stops rotating while I attend to it – and pretty much nothing else? Maybe it’s more than the weather that’s fogged in? I barely make time to eat and sleep. It’s a little bit crazy, I have to admit. What is it about me and writing that brings out this single-minded behaviour? No—don’t answer that!

I’d read somewhere that women were excellent multi-taskers. If this conclusion is based on averaging, then I  apologize to womankind for lowering the average.

The up-side to the crazy is that book 3 of The Gift Legacy, Redemption (now titled Burning Lies) is back in the hands of the publisher and only weeks away from release. I can’t wait!

And wait until you see the cover. Gifted artist, Viona Halim has, once again, painted a suitably ominous scene for Redemption’s cover. It’s breath-taking…and I’ll reveal it as soon as the fine-tuning on the title lettering is complete. The first people to see it will be my newsletter subscribers, who also receive free short stories.
