And Now Comes Disquiet

February 25, 2019 By JPMcLean 12 Comments

Woman on a log

And now comes disquiet.

It’s an odd feeling putting a series to bed. The long build of excitement reaches a peak then fades leaving disquiet in its wake.

The excitement of the launch lifts you up: holding the physical copy of the final book, smelling the pages as if they were a new puppy, reading the early reviews, attending book signings, planning the big farewell party.

But after the final book’s release, disquiet sucks you under: bidding farewell to characters you know better than your family leaves you hollow, your next book’s characters are still strangers who can’t begin to fill the gap; not knowing if your readers will give a hoot about your next distant book provokes loneliness.

Thankfully, time doesn’t let you linger in either state for long. It ticks away, oblivious to the petty fears of mere writers, nudging you along on your way.

Lover Betrayed $0.99 Ends Tomorow

And so it goes

The $0.99 launch price for Lover Betrayed, a Gift Legacy Companion book, ends tomorrow. If you’re missing this book in the series, now’s your chance to get it for launch pricing. After tomorrow, it returns to its regular price of $5.99. You can read an excerpt here.

Every day, the disquiet lifts a bit. Yesterday, I broke 32K words in my new book. It’s about a young woman who was born with an unfortunate birthmark. The woman believes her birthmark is a disfiguring curse. She doesn’t know the real curse is that her birthmark is disappearing.

Next month

Next month, I’m excited to be participating in a new adventure with writers who may be new to you, but who are far from unknown. I’m teaming up with a dozen fabulous writers, many of them A-list best sellers, to bring you new books at terrific prices along with bonus prizes. I’ll provide details shortly.

As always, I’d love to hear your feedback. Just hit reply or contact me via the social media buttons.

Secret Sky is the book that started it all. Get your copy of Secret Sky from Kindle with one click right here. And if ebooks aren’t your preference, click on the bookstore tab for other purchase options, or just click on the covers below.

Skidding into May’s Home Plate

May 31, 2017 By JPMcLean 9 Comments

Though I’ve committed to touching base here once a month, this time around, I’m quickly running out of month. I’m now skidding into May’s home plate with a to-do list that would choke a horse and a teaming inbox.

Photo of (L to R) JP McLean, Jennifer Manuel, Elinor FlorenceI’ll blame the warming weather that entices me outside, away from the keyboard, niggling emails, and a mess of chores. But how could I turn down a lunch with girlfriends? (That’s me on the left with Jennifer Manuel in the middle and Elinor Florence on the right.)

Photo of black pigs laying in a bed of hay at Orkney Farm on Denman Island.Or a walk in the sunshine? Those are the pigs that grunt their hellos when I pass by Orkney Farm. And the weekend farmers’ market—part social, part shopping—draws me in like a bee to nectar.

May is also a big birthday and anniversary month among my family and friends. This dinner at the Old House in Courtenay was a birthday celebration. That’s Elinor Florence and her husband Heinz on one side, and opposite are me and the Cave Master.

When I have sat down at the laptop this month, it’s felt like a wrestling match with a story that refuses to yield. It’s unruly, and the ref keeps throwing down (up?) yellow flags. It’s a sure sign I need to take a step back.

The birthdays and anniversaries remind me that time marches on, the yellow flags remind me that sometimes I need distance from the stories to see them clearly, and the sunshine reminds me to get outside, breathe, and realign my priorities.

Health and family comes first, writing second, all else? Get in line. Spring will bless us just once this year. Chores will go on the rinse and repeat cycle ad infinitum. I’m choosing sunshine with family, good friends, and piglets. See you in June! With any luck, the yellow flag situation will be resolved by then.

A story with no yellow flags is Emelynn’s story. Pick up Secret Sky from your favourite retailer right here! Or click on the image for more purchase options.

Molly Bids Adieu

Molly Bids Adieu
JP's dog Molly, a grey Wheaton-Schnauser-Poodle crossWe said goodbye to our sweet Miss Molly yesterday. If I ever make it to those pearly gates, I’m going to have a word with someone about the lifespan of dogs. It’s far too short and I’m not sure my heart can take any more holes.

Good Golly Miss Molly Dolly Lama left us just three months shy of her sixteenth birthday. She chased a ball and acted like a puppy right up until her last day.

Her gentle demeanour and big brown eyes won everyone over, and she never lost that wonderful sense of curiosity that kept us on our toes, and often had us laughing.

As a young dog, she had an affinity for socks and underthings. No one escaped her radar, especially visitors. If left alone with open guestroom doors, she’d collect bras and underwear, and proudly display them in the living room for all to see. Returning your guests’ underwear is one of those unique experiences you never imagined, when you brought your furball home.

JP's dog Molly on a beach with a large bone in her mouth. When she got released from the twelve-step undergarment program, she got hooked on shoes. If we left her alone, she’d gather an oddball collection and keep them safe on the bed. She even managed to carry one of  John’s dusty, steel-toed boots, complete with the unopened one-litre water bottle he’d shoved inside, up to the bed in the 5th wheel when we lived in Mexico.

The Cookie Hound

She was a cookie hound, which made her easy to train, and she unabashedly performed rollovers, indiscriminately shook paws, and begged with the best of them for the promise of a treat.

Molly could turn on the cute with a smile and a blink of her lashes, and was happy to show visitors her cookie jar. She’d adopt her most earnest look and gaze between the mark and her cookie jar, which usually shook free a cookie or two.

Photo of half-sister dogs, Soozie and Molly, Wheaten and Wheaten crossOther dogs and cats, however, weren’t fooled by the cute factor. They knew if Molly visited them, she would beeline it for their chow, and she enjodidn’t discriminate by brand or species. She’d clean out a budgie’s dish if she could reach it.

But she was also generous, and never minded sharing her own food dish, treats, beds or toys.

She’s the dog who sensed when you were sick or sad, and stayed close to keep you company.

We feel very fortunate to have had Molly’s company for so long. The house feels very empty without her, but we know she’s romping with her sister Soozie now. We imagine she’s having a blast meeting all the other pets and snarfing up an endless supply of tasty treats. Safe travels, little girl.

Writing and Wellness Features J.P. McLean

February 25, 2016 By JPMcLean 3 Comments

If you’ve a writer or other creative person, and have not yet discovered Colleen M. Story and her blog Writing and Wellness then you’re missing an interesting and valuable resource.

Her site’s mission statement is “Writers and other creatives need to stay well to keep producing the work they were meant to do.”

Pretty good fit, I’d say. And today, Colleen is featuring me on Writers on Wellness.

“When I think of physically challenging jobs, I imagine professional athletes, construction workers, or firefighters. Writers? not so much.”

But when back pain sidelined my writing, my gardening, and even my ability to sit comfortably, I revised my thinking. Writing and wellness go hand in hand.

So, though writing may not fit into an expected definition of physically challenging work, sitting for long periods of time, no matter how fit you are, is asking for trouble . . .

To continue reading, go on over to Writers on Wellness and check out!

Rest and relaxation is a key component of wellness. There’s no better way to relax than by reading. Click here to get a copy of Secret Sky, and if ereaders or Amazon aren’t your preference, other options are available under the Bookstore tab.
