Molly Gets Her Groom On

Molly Gets her Groom On

What do I do besides make up lies I call fiction?

One of the things I’ve gotten very good at since I started writing is prioritizing…also known around here as putting things off. I’d delegate, but for some reason that rarely works for me.

Our Wheaton Cross, Molly, before her groomingTake grooming the dog, for example. Molly was due for a clip at Christmas, but with all the company and cooking and such, well, I figured another week or two wouldn’t hurt. She got a brush and a bath and we made it through Christmas.

After Christmas we had more visitors and then I had to make a trip out of town. Those excuses worked wonders for a few more weeks. Then conveniently, the Cave Master himself had to go out of town. I managed to weasel another two weeks out of that one. Last month’s snowfall granted me another reprieve, despite the rolling eyeballs when I explained that it was just too cold for a clip.

Molly, our Wheaton Cross, after her groomingBut eventually, even I couldn’t ignore the whispers of, “You can’t see a thing, can you girl,” and the oft-repeated, “aren’t you a shaggy dog.”

So the ever-so-patient Good Golly Miss Molly Dalai Lama got her groom on.

Would you like some Redemption with your Mulled Wine?

January 7, 2014 By JPMcLean 2 Comments

Where else but Denman Island would people gather to sample warm libations and tasty nibbles alongside a touch of Redemption? It happened this past weekend and I’m happy to report that the book release party for The Gift: Redemption was a laughter-filled and resounding success.

My heartfelt thanks go to Elizabeth Chapman and Stephen Malthouse who hosted the event in their beautiful home. They’ve been stalwart supporters of my writing habit from the start and I’m so very grateful to call them friends.

Beyond Redemption

I wish we’d managed to get a photo, but we were having so much fun, the opportunity slipped right by. Therefore, this photo is neither Elizabeth nor Stephen, but two other gents who dropped in to sample a libation or two and are, reportedly, beyond Redemption.

Thanks also to the other wonderful friends and neighbours who joined us to celebrate the release of this third book of The Gift Trilogy. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me.

And speaking of support and encouragement, I’m thrilled to announce that both the Vancouver Island Regional Library and the Vancouver Public Library have purchased The Gift Trilogy for their collections. My thanks and gratitude to their respective acquisitions personnel.

2014 is off to a roaring start!

This edition published by FriesenPress, 8½” x 5½”, 328 Pages, Black and White

The wait is over. The Gift: Redemption is the stunning conclusion* of J.P. McLean’s whirlwind series set on the coast of British Columbia. Having barely survived a brutal attack by a murderous psychopath who coveted her gift, Emelynn Taylor seeks peace with her unruly powers and a new beginning. Instead, she collides with intrigue and becomes the target of faceless terrorism.

When the escalating violence spreads to the inner circle of her covert community, powerful figures within it surrender to paranoia, and Emelynn uncovers a tyrannous conspiracy that threatens to expose the gift and all those who share it.

With no way out, Emelynn must face her worst fears and gather all her strength to protect those she loves . . . and she must do it alone.

*Update

Redemption is now Burning Lies and is the third of seven books in The Gift Legacy series. You can read about the series’ evolution here.

Redemption Book Cover Revealed

November 7, 2013 By JPMcLean 6 Comments

Redemption Book CoverHere it is: Redemption Book Cover Revealed!

This is the book cover for Redemption*. You might have noticed the beach theme to the series’ covers. That’s because the beach is never far from the action in these books. This particular beach is near Bodega Bay in California. It’s where pivotal scenes in this third book take place.

It starts with a photo

Like the previous covers, this one originated with a photograph. I took this photo in early 2013 during a research trip to bodega Bay. (There’s no better way to fine-tune descriptive detail.) Viona Halim painted the photo and the designers at FriesenPress added the titles. Viona has, once again, created a cover that reflects the ominous mood of the book.

Redemption concludes** Emelynn Taylor’s extraordinary journey through a frightening new world, where brutal treachery and ambitious power collide with exhilarating freedom and infinite possibility.

November Release

FriesenPress will release Redemption in early November. The book is 5.5” x 8.5”, 328 pages, and will be available for order in e-book, trade paperback and hardcover formats from all the usual bookshops and on-line retailers.

Meantime, you can download an excerpt here. As always, your feedback is most welcome.

Update on Redemption Book Cover Revealed

*The cover for Redemption has undergone two updates. Once when it was republished with WindStorm Press in January of 2016 and again when it was re-titled Burning Lies in November of 2019.

**And silly me. I mistakenly thought Emelynn’s journey was done. It wasn’t. It’s now a 7-book series. You can read all about The Gift Legacy here.
