Redemption Book Cover Revealed

November 7, 2013 By JPMcLean 6 Comments

Redemption Book CoverHere it is: Redemption Book Cover Revealed!

This is the book cover for Redemption*. You might have noticed the beach theme to the series’ covers. That’s because the beach is never far from the action in these books. This particular beach is near Bodega Bay in California. It’s where pivotal scenes in this third book take place.

It starts with a photo

Like the previous covers, this one originated with a photograph. I took this photo in early 2013 during a research trip to bodega Bay. (There’s no better way to fine-tune descriptive detail.) Viona Halim painted the photo and the designers at FriesenPress added the titles. Viona has, once again, created a cover that reflects the ominous mood of the book.

Redemption concludes** Emelynn Taylor’s extraordinary journey through a frightening new world, where brutal treachery and ambitious power collide with exhilarating freedom and infinite possibility.

November Release

FriesenPress will release Redemption in early November. The book is 5.5” x 8.5”, 328 pages, and will be available for order in e-book, trade paperback and hardcover formats from all the usual bookshops and on-line retailers.

Meantime, you can download an excerpt here. As always, your feedback is most welcome.

Update on Redemption Book Cover Revealed

*The cover for Redemption has undergone two updates. Once when it was republished with WindStorm Press in January of 2016 and again when it was re-titled Burning Lies in November of 2019.

**And silly me. I mistakenly thought Emelynn’s journey was done. It wasn’t. It’s now a 7-book series. You can read all about The Gift Legacy here.

Fogged in

October 24, 2013 By JPMcLean 2 Comments

Full moon rise through the fog on Denman Island
Full moon rising through the fog on Denman Island

I’ve been squirreled away again. Fogged in. Granted, it’s easy to hunker down in lousy weather—like this dense fog that’s enveloped our part of the coast for the past ten days—but it’s not good. The burrowing in, that is, especially when I’m so narrowly focused.

Multi-tasking is something I know I can do; I routinely prep carrots for two meals and onions for three; I weed and fertilize while I set aside seedlings for next year’s plant sale; and I’m guilty of putting phone calls on speaker so I can make a bed or iron while catching up.

So, why is it that when the proof for my latest book comes in, my world stops rotating while I attend to it – and pretty much nothing else? Maybe it’s more than the weather that’s fogged in? I barely make time to eat and sleep. It’s a little bit crazy, I have to admit. What is it about me and writing that brings out this single-minded behaviour? No—don’t answer that!

I’d read somewhere that women were excellent multi-taskers. If this conclusion is based on averaging, then I  apologize to womankind for lowering the average.

The up-side to the crazy is that book 3 of The Gift Legacy, Redemption (now titled Burning Lies) is back in the hands of the publisher and only weeks away from release. I can’t wait!

And wait until you see the cover. Gifted artist, Viona Halim has, once again, painted a suitably ominous scene for Redemption’s cover. It’s breath-taking…and I’ll reveal it as soon as the fine-tuning on the title lettering is complete. The first people to see it will be my newsletter subscribers, who also receive free short stories. Porch Swing Party

September 9, 2013 By JPMcLean 2 Comments

A book signing on an island as small as Denman is a little like hanging out all afternoon on a covered porch with good friends dropping by to say hello. They stay for a spell and we share a laugh or two over cookies while we catch up on families and gardens, visitors and holidays, and especially how and when we arrived on the island. Local hot topics pop up in conversation as often as marvels at the beautiful weather and the speed at which time flies.

JP McLean signing books at Abraxas BookshopAnd fly, it does . . . it was less than a year ago that the good folks at Abraxas Books hosted the signing of my first book, The Gift: Awakening (now titled Secret Sky). When the second book, The Gift: Revelation (now titled Hidden Enemy), came out, once again, they jumped on board with enthusiasm. Thank you, Juan, Leslie, Corinne and Shaun for your early and continuing support.

And for everyone out there who’s been asking when the third book in the trilogy, The Gift: Redemption (now titled Burning Lies), will be coming out, you won’t have long to wait. I’m working toward a Christmas release and I’ll announce it all right here on my blog and through my newsletter. If you’re not getting my posts by email, click the “follow” button on my blog and you’ll get an email notice every time I post something new. Or sign up for my newsletter and you’ll get free short stories and a notice when a new book is coming out.

Until then, enjoy the spectacular weather, and support the hard-working folks at your local book store.

Just in Time for Summer

Just in Time for Summer

Another post? Already? Yes, well, the crow rant last week was a rare second weekly post for me (and a necessary purge). This one, only days later, is for a much happier event; an occasion that can’t wait. If I don’t tell you about it, I’ll burst.

I’m thrilled to announce that Revelation*, Book II of The Gift Trilogy, has been released.

The title spent a scant forty-eight hours on FriesenPress’s “Coming Soon” page before flitting over to their “Hot Off The Presses” page. I’m still pinching myself.

Being an indie author, the “release date” drama is somewhat of a muted affair. I’ve written about this before (Please Release Me) so I won’t repeat myself. But I’m excited to tell you that the book is now available. You can purchase it here or on the Bookstore tab. It’s available in hardcover, trade paperback and ebook formats from over 25,000 retailers.

Revelation Book CoverDangerous Alliances…

In Revelation, there’s no turning back for Emelynn Taylor, newly awakened flier still discovering the powers of a gift she can barely control.

Secrets unravel like threads from a dark shroud … a magical book … friends who are not what they seem … a powerful faction with claims on Emelynn … a  Machiavellian plan with her at its brutal center.

Threatened by a mysterious and terrifying enemy, Emelynn forms an uneasy alliance with another flier she doesn’t trust. She must risk everything to thwart an evil scheme and save her covey. But at what cost?
