Do you ever sit down to research something on the Internet and come away more confused than when you started? Today was one of those days. I’m trying to learn more about marketing and promotion. My target research was author branding. Instead of answers, I’ve come away with my head spinning and my to-do list growing at an alarming rate.
Consistency in branding
The one actionable take-away from today is the importance of consistency when branding. The photo/gravatar that I’ve been using for this blog is a photo of a fir tree that met its end in a wind storm last March. As eerie and fabulous as that photo is, it doesn’t have anything to do with my books (other than it’s eerie and fabulous).
I’ve now changed it out for an author photo, which I trust is on-brand. What do you think? I’m always happy to hear your comments.
2020 Update: My branding has come a long way. I now have a logo and brand colours and even a tag line “Writing Addictive Fiction.”
You can hear me in a video conversation with Crystal Stranaghan at the Creative Academy discussing brand logo designs.
In fact, I’ve rebranded my entire series as well. Read about it here.

I think I agree with the author photo…I say “think” because I keep going back and forth on this. Consistency is the key, of course, which is why I try to use my cover pic wherever I can but I think it’s also good to give the reader an idea of who they’re reading in blogs. There’s a human identification with an author photo.

Thanks. I like your stylized photo – better than most. I keep hoping I’m on the right track with this stuff. You’ve put the image in my head of a tree stump writing a blog. Thanks for the Monday laugh.
