Secret Sky Has Launched

November 16, 2018 By JPMcLean 8 Comments

The book that started it all, Secret Sky, has launched. When Emelynn Taylor accepted a stranger’s mysterious gift, she couldn’t know it would hijack her life. Now, it strikes without warning, strips her of gravity and sends her airborne, unchecked. Anywhere. Anytime.

Secret Sky Release Announcement

Everybody wishes they could fly—until it happens.

When Emelynn Taylor wakes up in the emergency room, her injuries present Dr. Avery Coulter with more questions than answers. Who is this guarded young woman? Why was she found in the middle of Sunset Park? How can she have injuries consistent with falling from above the tree line? Seemingly from nowhere? And, more importantly: Why is she lying about it?

The truth is stranger than anyone could have imagined – least of all Emelynn herself.

Nine years earlier, during the same summer she’d lost her father, 12-year-old Emelynn accepted a ‘gift’ from a mysterious woman called Jolene. Now, as she recovers in Dr. Coulter’s emergency room, she’s left wondering if that blessing was really more of a curse. Jolene’s gift planted the seeds of incredible power within Emelynn – but what’s the point of such abilities if you can’t control them? Her emerging gift of flight, for example, nearly killed Emelynn when it sent her plummeting to the sidewalk in Sunset Park. Next time, she might not be so lucky.

But Emelynn is determined to master her abilities, and returns to the seaside cottage where Jolene had once granted her this ‘gift.’ There, Dr. Coulter guides Emelynn in uncovering a secret society of others just like her, who inhabit a mysterious world-within-a-world that challenges everything Emelynn thought she’d known. But the more she uncovers, the murkier the truth becomes. Soon, Emelynn is left questioning the motives of those she’d trusted the most – and is forced to rely on her barely mastered powers in a desperate fight for survival.

Secret Sky is the first book in the thrilling, otherworldly The Gift Legacy series by JP McLean. Seamlessly blending paranormal mystery, fantasy, and romance, this beautifully written and deeply resonant adventure will swoop you into a vivid, new reality and leave your imagination soaring.

Secret Sky will be available for a limited time for $0.99. If you’re missing the first book in the series, now’s the time to grab it.

Teasing Out the Weeds

April 29, 2018 By JPMcLean 15 Comments

Cherry blossoms

We’ve had a little taste of summer here on Denman Island with a stretch of warm, sunny days. What a treat! The first of our asparagus has been picked (it was delicious), and the rhubarb is perfectly crisp and a brilliant red. I even got out in the garden in my shirtsleeves and tidied up a few neglected corners. My achy back aside, it felt good to get outdoors, teasing out the weeds and planting a few cheery annuals.

I’ll soon be doing the same with the next book in the Gift Legacy series—tentatively titled Deadly Deception. The editor has just returned her notes and I can hardly wait to dig into them.

The New Titles

But first, I wanted to share with you the new titles I’m considering for the rebranding of the Gift Legacy series. If you haven’t been following this blog, the new titles and covers will better position the books in the contemporary fantasy/thriller genre, and clear up any confusion about whether or not they’re religious. Elinor Florence has been instrumental in this effort and I can’t thank her enough for her enthusiasm and imaginative title suggestions.  I’d love your feedback, your critique or your two cents.  Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think.

Book 1 The Gift: Awakening becomes Secret Sky

🎉

Book 2 The Gift: Revelation becomes Hidden Enemy

🎉

Book 3 The Gift: Redemption becomes Burning Lies

🎉

Book 4 The Gift: Penance becomes Lethal Waters

🎉

Jackson Delaney’s story The Gift: Betrayal becomes Lover Betrayed

What I’m Reading

Check out Elinor Florence’s latest book, Wildwood. It’s the story of one woman’s incredible resolve to make a better life for herself and her emotionally challenged daughter in the backwoods of northern Alberta. I loved it and gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Author Update: In 2019, the rebranding was completed. The original covers and titles are no longer available. But you can read the same magical story in Secret Sky from your favourite retailer right here! Or click on the image for more purchase options.

Book Blurb Blues

March 28, 2018 By JPMcLean 12 Comments

Arm sticking out of the ocean

How is it I can push through writing a +90,000-word book but struggle with a 150-word back-of-the-book blurb? I feel like the person in that photo: underwater and needing a lifeline. I've got the book blurb blues. There’s a lot of room in a book to tell a story, to build characters and sneak in plot twists. Not so with back-of-the-book blurbs. You’ve got a handful of words to make a reader want to know more about your story without giving too much away. It’s ad copy. It needs to hit hard and fast and hook the reader. It’s a different skill set from novel-writing, and one I’m still learning.

That’s where I’m at with the two new books in the series.

It’s also where I’m at with the five existing books in the series.

As regular readers of my blog will know, I’m heading down a rebranding path which includes revisiting the existing blurbs. No doubt I’m in for many frustrating hours banging my head against the wall hoping some precision wordsmithing falls out. I may need a helmet.

On a lighter note, we’re on the back end of herring season here on Denman Island, which means the seas lions have gorged and are lazing around in contented pods. From shore, what we see are dozens of sea lion flippers sticking out from the water at odd angles with the occasional snout making an appearance. But from the air, it’s a completely different perspective. Thanks to a friend with a drone, we were treated to some brand new and spectacular views. Until next time ... enjoy.

Location Hunting in CA

November 27, 2017 By JPMcLean 14 Comments

Photo of rocks in the sand of a Bodega Bay, CA beachOne of the greatest perks of writing is travelling for research. Back in April 2013, I made a trip to Bodega Bay, CA. That time I was searching for the perfect shot for the cover of Burning Lies (formerly Redemption.) Now I’m location hunting in CA for Olive Grove in Paso Robles, California the perfect setting for a pivotal, high-powered meeting of nine influential families for the next book in the Gift Legacy series. These families have been threatened and are highly vigilant of their privacy and their security.

Earlier books in the series dictated that the meeting would take place in California. I considered setting the scene in a warehouse, an isolated country manor, or even a barn. And then I thought, why not a winery?

Photo of the entrance to the Stag's Leap wine cave in CaliforniaAfter consultation with friends familiar with California’s wine country, and subsequent online research, I narrowed the possibilities to a climate-controlled cave with wine barrels lining its walls; a private estate down a winding, oak-lined drive; or an 18th century stone castle.

Photo of the Castello di Amorosa Winery Napa, California. It's build from stone and brick and looks like a castleAn Impressive Setting

Any of these spectacular locations would make an impressive setting for a clandestine meeting of high-end power brokers. But to describe any of these locations with authenticity, I need to know what they sound like, what they feel like, even what they smell like.

I could see only one solution—road trip!

Photo of a dining room table and piano in a wine cellarAnd what a fabulous trip it’s been. Turns out, every one of these locations has one or more spectacular meeting or dining rooms with impressive furniture in awe-inspiring surroundings. (They also have delicious wine which must be sampled, but I digress.)

Now that all of my senses have been exposed to the potential of these places, I am primed to write the scene. Though it will be a mash-up of several locations, you’ll recognize it when you read it.

Meantime, enjoy these pics from our trip to Pismo Beach, CA, and points north through Napa.

Photo of a GPS showing very windy road coloured in bright pink in CaliforniaAnd if you ever have the opportunity to visit this area, I highly recommend it. The scenery is spectacular, as is the wine. But if you’re prone to motion sickness, take something for it before you travel the northern portions of Hwy. 29.
